How do I get motivated to study to take an HSE test?

First, focus on your goal. What is it that's driving you to get your high school equivalency certificate? Is it to find a job or to enter into a career program? When you focus on why you need the certificate, it's easier to overcome the obstacles that stand in your way.

Second, create a supportive environment. It's tough to stay motivated when you feel alone in your struggles. Tell your family or a few trusted friends who can help to keep you track and hold you accountable in making progress.

How do I study if I have a learning disability?

A learning disability is a classification that includes several areas of functioning in which a person has difficulty learning in a typical manner, usually caused by an unknown factor or factors. Given the "difficulty learning in a typical manner", this does not exclude the ability to learn in a different manner. What are scam websites?

A scam website will offer to sell you a GED^® diploma or high school diploma without requiring testing or coursework. These are websites that claim you can take the test at home, online or via mail.

Be aware, if you purchase a diploma from a scam website, it will not be accepted by schools, employers or the military because it is fake.

What is a high school equivalency certificate?

A high school equivalency (HSE) certificate is the equivalent of a high school diploma and is obtained by passing a high school equivalency exam. The exam certifies that you have achieved the academic skills of a high school graduate.

There are two HSE tests available: the GED^® Test and the HiSET^® Exam.

What is the difference between a GED® and high school diploma?

A high school equivalency certificate shows that you've passed a high school equivalency test (GED or HiSET) and demonstrated the skills equivalent to a high school graduate. A regular high school diploma is earned by completing the curriculum and requirements of an accredited high school. Some states offer an Adult High School diploma. Check with your state's Adult Education Department for more information on where to test for your GED. Be wary of online high schools offering high school diplomas. They are not accepted by employers or colleges.

How can I tell if a certificate or diploma is authentic?

A legitimate online high school offering a high school diploma will be accredited by a nationally recognized agency, as found in the U.S. Department of Education's List of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies.

A reputable test preparation program will provide you with their licensing information, their Better Business Bureau and/or DUNS profiles. Look for student reviews and for the organization's profile on the Better Business Bureau site.

How do I prepare for the GED® Test?

There are three steps to preparing for the GED^® Test: plan, practice and pass.

Make sure you are prepared by learning what your strengths and weaknesses are and following a study plan that will work best for you.

How many hours a week should I study?

How much time you study really depends on your schedule. If you are willing to study at least an hour a day, you could be ready to pass the test in 4-6 weeks, depending on your academic background and how long it has been since you were in school.

Which high school equivalency test should I take?

There are three nationally recognized high school equivalency exams: the GED^® Test and HiSET^® Exam. Every state offers at least one of these exams; some states offer two or all three of them. If your state offers more than one exam, you may be able to choose which one to take.

You can check with your local testing center to see which exams they offer., or learn more about the differences between the exams and which test you should take in your state.

Which is better: a high school diploma or an HSE certificate?

It is always better to graduate from high school and obtain your high school diploma. There are certain advantages of being able to show that you have completed the coursework that a traditional high school requires in terms of employment, education and military service entry level.

If a regular high school diploma is not available to you then the best alternative is a state-approved high school equivalency diploma: GED or HiSET certificate. 98% of U.S. colleges and universities and 99% of employers accept the GED or HiSET  diploma without discrimination. Be wary of online high schools offering quick online diplomas. They are scams and will not be accepted by employers or colleges.

Four Ways to Get Help

Local libraries. Libraries are often overlooked in test preparation. A library card is free! With it you have access to books, references materials, computers with internet and much more. Some libraries may offer test prep classes, and you may even be able to find a local tutor. Ask a librarian at the circulation or reference desk.

Overdrive Media app. Do you have a library card and a computer or mobile device? You can use the Overdrive app to remotely check out free e-books and audiobooks through the library system, especially if your schedule makes it difficult to get to the library when it is open. You can have up to 6 items checked out at any given time and there are no hidden fees to use the app.

Personal tutors.Tutors offer one-on-one, face-to-face instruction for high school equivalency test prep. There are multiple ways to find a tutor: at your local adult learning center, from a local library or college campus, and websites where tutors post about their services. Try Wyzant to find a tutor in your area.

Online resources.There are many free online resources to help you improve your reading, provide you with information about specific topics on the test and as well as printable practice worksheets or games. Free resources will need to be vetted to meet the needs of the high school equivalency tests.

Why should I get a high school equivalency (HSE) certificate?

Without a high school equivalency certificate, getting a job or promotion can be very challenging. A high school equivalency certificate can open doors to jobs, promotions, and job training. Full time workers with a high school diploma earn $10,000 to $20,000 a year more that workers without a diploma. Adults without a high school diploma are twice as likely to be living in poverty as those with their high school diploma and three times as likely to be unemployed as those with college degrees.

A high school equivalency certificate opens the doors to trade schools, community colleges, and universities. The skills learned for the high school equivalency tests will prepare you for college level work. Most people start on the road to get a high school equivalency certificate so that they can get a better job or more education. But there's a benefit from passing a high school equivalency test that many people don't take into account: feeling good about yourself. Are online high schools legit?

The overwhelming majority of online high schools are not real schools offering authentic and recognized high school diplomas. There are, however, a few legitimate online high schools. They will be accredited by a nationally recognized agency, as found in the U.S. Department of Education's List of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies.

Most online high schools are "diploma mills" who will sell fake diplomas and transcripts. Here's how to spot a fake diploma school:

• It awards the diploma based on an online test or life experience.
• It promises you a diploma in a few days or weeks.
• It includes fake transcripts and grades with the fake diploma.
• It's not a member of the Better Business Bureau.

GED® Test

What is the length of the GED® Test?

The GED^® Test has four content areas and takes roughly seven and a half hours.

The Reasoning Through Language Arts test is150 minutes long and testing is broken down into three sections: Section 1 (35 minutes) tests all content. Section 2 (45 minutes) is the Extended Response portion of the test.

The Mathematical Reasoning test is about 115 minutes long. Calculators are not allowed for the first several questions (about 5-7 questions), but the remaining test allows calculators.

The Social Studies test is 70 minutes long.

The Science test is 90 minutes long.

What is the passing score for the GED test?

To pass the GED^® Test, you will need to score a minimum of 145 out of 200 (at least 45% correct) on each of the four subjects. This equates to getting less than half of the questions correct.

There are three score levels you can earn on your test:

1. GED Passing Score (145-164)
2. GED College Ready (165-174)
3. GED College Ready + Credit (175-200)

What does GED® stand for?

The term "GED" is a registered trademark of the American Council on Education ("ACE"). The GED^® Testing Service is a joint venture of the American Council on Education and Pearson, is the sole developer for the GED^® Test. Originally, the initials "GED" stood for "general educational development," and the term shows that the GED^® Test measures a learner's skills in a variety of important subjects. A GED^® Test credential shows that the recipient has the same general level of academic achievement as a typical high school graduate.

Who is eligible to take the GED® Test?

GED^® Test requirements vary from state to state. The GED^® Testing Service suggests the following GED requirements for you to take the test:

• You are not enrolled in high school, and
• You have not graduated from high school, and
• You are at least age 16*, and
• You meet state, provincial, or territorial requirements regarding age, residency, and the length of time since leaving school.

If you are considering leaving high school, the GED^® Testing Service recommends that you first meet with your high school counselor to talk seriously about your decision and the level of academic skill needed to pass the GED^® Test.

*Some states require GED^® Test takers to be at least 18 years of age.

HiSET® Exam

What is the passing score for the HiSET® Exam?

You must score a minimum of 8 points in each subject, a minimum score of 45 points combined, and at least 2 points on the Language Arts Writing essay component.

How long does it take to study for the GED® Test?

Every student is different and it will depend on how much time you can dedicate to studying each day. With our GED Academy^™ online course, students who study for an hour or more each day can be ready to take the GED^® Test in about six weeks. When creating your study schedule, be sure to plan ahead. If you know when you want to take the GED^® Test, you can set up your schedule to aim for that date.

What are the steps I need to take to get a high school equivalency certificate?

Do I have to take the GED Ready® practice test before testing?

If you are 18 years or older, you don't need to take the GED Ready® practice test before taking the GED® test.

Do I need to take a GED® class or receive instruction from a local prep center before I can take the test?

If you are 18 years or older, you don't need to take a GED® class before taking the GED® test.

How do I pay for the test?

You will pay for the test online with a debit or credit card when you schedule your test.

If the closest testing center is in a different state, can I take the test there?

Some states allow people who don't live there to take the GED® test and others don't. You'll need to check the residency requirement for the state that you're interested to test in.

What do I need to do to take the test if I'm underage?

If you are under the age of 18, you must have an Underage Waiver prior to scheduling your test. If you are 16 or 17 you are required to meet the conditions set by the school district in which you resides or attends school. You will have to meet the conditions as set forth by your school district before the Underage Waiver will be granted by the school district representative. You must contact a representative from the district in which you live or go to school for information on the specific requirements for testing. A list of district representatives is found here. Once this Underage Waiver has been submitted to the office by your local representative, it will be processed within 3-5 business days of receipt. Where can I find free online GED classes for adults?

Free online GED classes for adults are often minimal and might contain only practice questions. So, they can be difficult and provide poor preparation. Free local classes are a good alternative and the best way to find free local classes is to contact local adult education centers, high schools, and community colleges. However, free local classes have costs in terms of time, child care, and scheduling. For many learners—especially those who need extra help—cheap online classes can provide a better learning experience and help you get your GED faster. What about my old GED® Test scores?

The GED^® Testing Service issued a new form of the GED^® Test in January 2014. Anyone who has started GED testing, but failed to complete the testing successfully when the new form was released, must begin the entire GED^® Test again (including paying all fees). Some states require the test taker to pass all the tests in the year they are attempted.

The Spanish version of the GED^® Test changed on January 1, 2014 and the same rules apply; any testing done before January 1, 2014 will not be applied to the new form. As with the English version, the entire test must be taken again (including paying all fees).

GED^® Test scores are valid until the GED^® Testing Service updates the GED^® Test.  This usally happens every ten years.  The last update was in 2014.
